Mark Anthony Carli, 69, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2020. Mark was born on December 28, 1950 in Hampton and resided in Hampton his entire life. Mark was a graduate of Kecoughtan High School Class of 1970 and the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School in 1972. Mark began his Newport News Shipbuilding career as a machinist and later moved to Production Control. He retired as a Master Shipbuilder in 2018 after 44 year of dedicated service.

Mark joined the Buckroe Volunteer Fire Company in 1972. He held the office of secretary for many years, as well as line officer positions. He was honored to be chosen as a life member of the fire company. Sadly, his subsequent physical limitations prevented him from taking an active role in firefighting, but he remained a loyal and dedicated member.

Mark was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Apprentice School golf team, playing in numerous tournaments for the school and later in life. Mark was a lifelong New York Yankees fan and fulfilled his dream of attending a game at the original Yankee Stadium. Another passion for Mark was league bowling. He was the league secretary for the Hampton Handicap League for many years, secretary of the Hampton Roads Bowling Association, and inducted into the Hampton Roads Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Mark spent the majority of his bowling career at Century Lanes in Buckroe, where he would meet his future wife, Chris, in 1973.

Mark is preceded in death by his parents, Matthew Carli, Jr. and Shirley B. Carli, his brother Matthew Carli III, and his nephew Jeremiah D. Bragg. Mark is survived by his wife of 46 years, Christine Carli, son Adam Carli, daughter Allison Carli Diede, grandchildren Kaleb Okuley-Carli, Jacob Diede, and Lydia Diede, sister Teresa Carli Bragg, brother-in-law J. David Bragg, nephew Zachary Bragg, sister-in-law Tricia Ritchie, niece Erin Carli Ward, niece Ashley Carli, and several great nieces and a great nephew.

The family would like to thank the Buckroe Volunteer Fire Company and Ladies’ Auxiliary for their thoughtfulness and kindness. Additionally, the family extends their appreciation to close family and friends for their warmth and compassion during this difficult time. Expressions of sympathy can take the form of donations to the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, or a charity of your choice. A memorial gathering to celebrate Mark’s life will be held at a later date.
