Nancy Rheuark Matt, 70, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at Mission Hospital.

Nancy was born May 24, 1952, at Langley Air Force Base (VA) Hospital to the late Howard L. Rheuark, Sr. and Sarah Jane Moore Rheuark. She was a retired school teacher and more recently took pride as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist working with visually impaired children.

She and her husband, retired Lt. Col. Craig P. Matt, lived in several states as well as England and the Phillipines before moving to Asheville in 2019. She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church where she was a founding member of the St. Joan of Arc Quilting Ministry. She was also a member of the Asheville Quilt Guild and the Carolina Mountain Longarm Association.

In addition to her husband, Craig, she is survived by a son, Philip C. Matt (Sara), a grandson, Colin; sisters Sylvia King (Jim) and Susan Waters (George) and a brother, Howard L. Rheuark, Jr. (Sharon).

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Dean Cesa at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 24, 2023, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church.

The family will greet friends from 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. at the church prior to Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nancy’s memory to the American Cancer Society or to the St. Joan of Arc Quilting Ministry, 768 Asbury Road, Candler, NC 28715.

Bonnie Bridger (Mittelmaier) (1969)

All I can say is this girl was just such an awesome friend.  Loved her and her sister Sylvia. This family must be so heartbroken.  Many wonderful, happy, and fun memories.
