NEWPORT NEWS - Sandra Lee Byrum passed away suddenly on March 14, 2014 at the age of 62. She was born in Shelby County, TN, the daughter of the late Elouise Payne and Daniel Grady Norris. Sandra graduated from Kecoughtan High School and was a longtime resident of Hampton and Newport News. She worked as an inspector at the Newport News Shipbuilding for many years, where she met her husband of 25 years, William H. Byrum, Jr. Given a strong sense of community and respect for her country, she was a Girl Scout troop leader and worked to support veterans through service to the American Legion. Sandra was a deeply caring woman with a brilliant smile that brought joy to the lives of all her knew her. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, William H. Byrum, Jr.; daughter and spouse, Jennifer and Christopher Johnson; stepfather, Julian Payne; brother and spouse, Daniel and Gail Norris; and sister Gerri Bailey. A memorial service will be held in her honor at 5 PM on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. The family will receive friends beginning at 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support Alzheimer's research, www.alz.org. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.

Bonnie Bridger (Mittelmaier) (1969)

As I was made aware of Sandy's passing, I reflected back on our days at KHS and I thought about her laugh.  For some reason when I looked at her picture that is what struck me.  I can just see her beginning to laugh and her big, happy, smile.  What a terrible shock for all of her friends and loved ones to lose Sandy at this time of her life.  Well, rest in peace lovely girl, you will be missed.
