The Greatest Fisherman We Knew Is Now With The Greatest Fisherman We Know
Obituary for Donald Scott Walters Sr.
"The Greatest Fisherman We Knew Is Now With The Greatest Fisherman We Know."
Donald “Don” Scott Walters, Sr., a retired machinist from AMF and a 37 year long resident of West Point, Virginia died unexpectedly on March 31, 2021 at the age of 70.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Charlotte Walters; and his brother, Johnny Walters III.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Debbie Walters; two sons, Scott Walters, Eric Walters and his wife, Erica; two grandchildren, Colten and Taylor Walters; a sister, Shirley Golden; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Don was born in Atlanta, Georgia on December 7, 1950 to Charlotte and Johnny Walters. He graduated from Kecoughtan High School in 1969. He then joined the United States Air Force in 1970 where he served a four year term. A year later, he married the love of his life Debbie in December of 1975.
Don grew up in the Buckroe Beach area of Hampton, Virginia. This is where he spent many days and nights fishing in his boat or at the end of Buckroe Fishing pier. He loved the ocean and loved sharing his knowledge of the sea with his boys and grandchildren, and really anyone who would listen to his “fish tales.” Don was also an avid surfer and loved teaching anyone who wanted to know how to “ride the waves.” This is where he earned his nickname “Moondoggie.”
Don leaves a legacy of love and integrity with his family and those who knew him. He has left behind wonderful memories of a loving husband, father and grandfather “Pop.” We are grateful for each and every day we got to see his glowing smile, and for the lessons learned and all the jokes we shared.
Don set an exemplary example as a husband, father and grandfather “Pop.” He was spiritually strong and compassionate, and had a clever sense of humor. Above all he loved and cherished his family and friends. He would do anything and everything to help them.
Don was a lifetime member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir and worked with the EYC youth group for many years. He was a member of the West Point Volunteer Fire Department and the West Point VFW. He spent many Friday nights under the lights at the West Point High School Football games pulling chain for the football team.
We will miss him more than words can express. We love you Moondoggie.
A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the West Point VFW.

Bonnie Bridger (Mittelmaier) (1969)
I learned of the passing of this KHS '69 Classmate from another Classmate. I am always so appreciative of being notified because otherwise, I might miss this loss and I worry about how many others we have not been notified of and have not been able to honor on our KHS website. As I understand it, Donald was taken unexpectedly and very quickly. He leaves a loving family and many friends. His obituary was a real tribute to what is described as a down to earth person. So sorry to learn of this loss and prayers for his family and friends. Bonnie Bridger Mittelmaier, KHS '69
Ann Vincent (Atkins) (1969)
Don and I lived just down the street from each in Brockroe. We knew each from Buckroe Jr. High and Kecoughtan. He was a good friend and I have often wondered where he was and how his family unfolded.
So glad his life was full of love and family and his relationship with God. Go now dear friend and be at peace in our Lord Jesus. Blessings, Ann Vincent Atkins

I remember Donald well from Buckroe and Kecoughtan. He was always a good guy. Sounds like he lived a great life. Sorry to hear of his passing.
