HAMPTON - Peter Michael Wallio of Hampton, Virginia passed away on September 30, 2013. He followed his passion and lived his dreams, touching the lives of many along the way. He graduated from Old Dominion University in 1967 and began a 35 year career of teaching in the Hampton School System and selling insurance with Horace Mann. Sailing was his passion and his accomplishments ran the gamut, from building boats, racing, teaching and coaching to cruising. A well known competitor on the racing circuit, his love of sailing was infectious. Pete was quite the story teller, telling inspiring and often humorous stories after racing, always captivating those around him. After years of racing at the local, national and world championship levels, Pete added blue water racing and cruising to his sailing resume. He was frequently sought as a tactician, coach and mentor. Several notable All Americans and an Olympian got their start under his tutelage. Pete was devoted to his family. He is survived by daughters Kristin Parks (Tripp) and Tamara Wallio-Harvell; four grandchildren Aston, Tyler, Katherine and Samantha; brothers Lee (Rosemary) and Richard (Olivia); cousin Betsy Roberts (Don); sister-in-law Vesta Wallio; and former wife Wendy Wallio. Memorial services will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 151 Wythe Parkway, Hampton (757-245-7904) on Saturday, October 5th at 12:30PM, followed by a reception at the Hampton Yacht Club.

Thanks to Phil Elliott for sharing this sad news about one of our teachers from KHS.  Go to Phil's profile to see a very young teacher Mr. Wallio!  Not to mention a very youthful Phil Elliott.
